Amsterdam - Who will continue?

Fr. Harrie (RIP)

During last summer 2010 passed away on the journey in Kampala, Uganda, at the age of 78, one of the great Salesians involved with hundred of young volunteers for the street children work
around the Salesian world.

I share some insights sent from Amsterdam.

It was with great shock that the Dutch delegation received the sad news of Fr. Harrie Kanters SDB. He passed away on 26 July 2010 at 07.30 in the morning, in Kampala, Uganda while he was leading and accompanying a group of Dutch young volunteers.

Fr. Harrie has worked all his life with and for the youth. He was a visionary for several youth work in the Netherlands and abroad. Where ever he had been and what ever work he took up, he carried them out with great responsibility, enthusiasm and spirit of Don Bosco. His motto was “To be a bearer of God’s love to the young”. During the last 15 years he was the founder and director of several works (SAMEN, DB JONATHAN, JONGEREN OP DOORTOCHT, LEEFGROEP, and DRUGS PASTORATE) in the city of Amsterdam.

With the sudden demise of Fr. Harrie, there is a big concern to the Salesian works and Church in the city of Amsterdam. This is mainly because Harrie was the only active Salesian in Amsterdam and almost all the religious congregations are already withdrawing from the city of Amsterdam due to lack of personnel in their respective orders. Being a cosmopolitan city it requires acute pastoral care and Salesian presence.

Fortunately Fr. Harrie has left behind a great legacy and numerous young and adult volunteers who stood close to his works who want to continue the several works in the city of Amsterdam. There is also a foundation who take care of the administrative and daily activities of diverse projects in Amsterdam. But all the young people and volunteers with one voice will say that “we need a Salesian in our midst who will guide and lead the Salesian works in Amsterdam.”

Fr. Harrie dreamt of an international community in the city of Amsterdam because of it’s multi-ethnic character. We hope that his dream will come true and we really look for young Salesians who wants to take his place in the city of Amsterdam.

I pray our Lady to raise not only one Salesian who will take the place of Fr. Harrie, but ten of this missionary heart amidst Europe. Really wanted!
